Abstract

Abstract The behavior of 2, 6-substituted phenols in hydrocarbons under the influence of gamma radiation and in the absence of oxygen was studied. Thus 2-methyl-6-tert. butyl phenol in isooctane solution was alkylated in the position 4 and 2-methyl-4-/1, 1, 3, 3- tetramethylbutyl/ -6-tert. butylphenol was formed at a conversion 33%. Among the products also 3, 3-'dimethyl-5, 5-ditert. butyl-4, 4-'biphenyldiol was found. Radiation yields were calculated and some reactions of the alkylation mechanism were proposed.
