Abstract

Abstract The theoretical formulation for zero-field splitting mechanisms produced by spin-orbit admixtures of excited states into the ground 6 A 1 state is critically examined employing an orbital basis appropriate to octahedral symmetry. Anisotropic orbital variation of the spin-orbit parameter is included into the theory and is discussed quantitatively using a model which credits this effect to covalency.
