Abstract

Abstract In aqueous solution, the title compound exists as an equilibrium between the unsolvated planar diamagnetic and the disolvated pseudooctahedral paramagnetic form. The chemical shift of one of the seven contact-shifted proton resonances in D 2O varies with temperature by more than 200 ppm over the temperature range 270 to 360 K. Simultaneous fits of three of the observed chemical shifts as a function of temperature and pressure gave ΔH° = −39.7 ± 0.3 kJ mol −1, ΔS° = −133.3 ± 1.0 J K −1 mol −1, and ΔV° = −10.0 ± 0.1 cm 3 mol −1 for the equilibrium.
