Abstract

Abstract A case is reported of multiple metabolic abnormalities, which is presented in the form of hypokalemic paralysis associated with hypocalcemic tetany. The severe potassium deficiency was probably due to chronic purgation, and reasons are given for the suggestion that the hypocalcemia was due to the impairment of parathyroid function caused by the prolonged hypokalemia. A megaloblastic anemia due to folic acid deficiency and a magnesium deficiency were also demonstrated. A chronic pyelonephritis with glomerular insufficiency was present, and permanent impairment of renal function is noted.
