Abstract

Abstract The co-precipitation method has been applied for preparing doped zirconia powders. Differential thermal analysis/ thermogravimetry and powder X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the thermal behaviour and to determine the crystal phase of samples produced. In this study, a phase of ( Zr, M)( SO 4) 2- x ·4 H 2 O ( M = Mg, Ca or Y) has been produced. Experimental results show that the kind of the doping oxide, calcination temperature, the nature of the SO 2- 4 radical and the structure of the precursor affect, to a different extent, the stabilization of the high temperature modifications (tetragonal and/or cubic phases) of the zirconia powders.
