The Supreme Court Library belongs to the network of judicial libraries which provide essential support services to the Spanish Courts. This article analyses the development of the Library, taking into account the changing nature of the socio-political environment and the institutional framework within which this development has occurred. . The article identifies three distinct chronological periods. The first period covers the years between the creation of the Court in 1812, to the end of the Civil War in 1939. The second period focuses on the development of the Library from the beginning of Franco´s dictatorship to establishment of democracy. The third period concentrates on the current situation of the Library, identifying its future requirements and presenting proposals for on-going improvement. Steps necessary to overcome past deficiencies, to introduce new technology, and to improve the user experience are seen as keys to the continuing development of the Library and its service, a future inextricably linked to the institutions within which it was first created. ________________________________
