Cross-sections for the reactions226Ra(n,2n)225Ra and226Ra(n,3n)224Ra with 14·5 MeV neutrons

Abstract

Abstract About 5 mg of 226Ra were irradiated with 14·5 MeV neutrons. The products of the 226Ra ( n,2 n) 225Ra and 226Ra( n,3 n) 224Ra reactions were determined by isolating 209Pb and 212Bi from their respective decay chains. 209Pb was isolated by separating 213Bi from the radium by means of an electrochemical deposition and then allowing 209Pb to grow in from its decay chain. 209Pb was then separated and its β-particle activity was counted in a 4π proportional counter. 212Bi was obtained by an electrochemical deposition following an electrolytic deposition of 212Pb. The α-particle activity of 212Bi was counted in a gridded ionization chamber. The values found for the cross-sections are as follows— 226 Raσ(n,2n)=1·60±0middot;20 barn 226 Raσ(n,3n)=0·63±0middot;07 barn
