Properties of ultrathin Ag- and Au-films on Si(111)7 × 7

Abstract In this work an attempt is made to retrieve structural information about Ag (or Au) covered Si(111)7 × 7 surfaces from thermal desorption and photoemission spectra of xenon adsorbed on these surfaces. On the clean Si(111)7 × 7 surface three different Xe adsorption states are discernible, the relative abundances of which are in agreement with the surface topography of the DAS structure model. Both Ag and Au lead to a significant smoothing of the surface topography, but Ag is concluded to form islands with a short-ranged perturbation of the Si(111)7 × 7 structure, while Au seems to cause a long range lifting of the 7 × 7 reconstruction.
