Abstract

Abstract The reclamation of mangrove swamps for human settlement is a growing concept in the Niger Delta of Nigeria because of the limited availability of land for socio-economic and infrastructural development or for strategic reasons. The geological and geotechnical characteristics of the subsoil in New Finima throws light onto problems that arise when an attempt is made to develop a mangrove swamp. These characteristics are discussed in this paper and in relation to the proposed building and shore protection structures.
