Effects of UV light on the efficiency of alpha-particle detection of CR-39, LR-115 type II and CN-85

Abstract

Abstract In order to estimate how long solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) could function successfully outdoors under environmental conditions (under UV light and temperature), some simulation experiments have been performed using a SEPAP 12-24 device. We have focused our investigation on the changes of the efficiency of alpha-particle detection of three regularly used SSNTDs (CR-39, LR-115 type II, and CN-85). Those changes have been discussed in terms of photo- and thermo-oxidation phenomena occuring during UV exposure. Relevant results obtained on the changes of sensitivity, bulk etch rate V b, and etching time are also discussed.
