Surface acoustic wave studies of the magnetic phases of Gd and Tb

Abstract

Abstract We have developed a technique for the generation and detection of surface acoustic wavers in small polycrystalline and single crystal samples covering the temperature range from 200–320 K. This has allowed a study to be made of surface acoustic wave propagation (at 5 MHz) in the rare earth elements Gd and Tb including all their different magnetic phases. Anomalies are noted in both the velocity and attenuation of the surface waves in the vicinity of the known phase transitions in these materials. In addition the behaviour, at times, is different from that predicted from bulk wave measurements and can be attributed to surface properties. Magnetic field effects would indicate that these surface effects may well be due to the surface magnetic domain structure being different to the bulk.
