Abstract

Abstract Transport of hydroxyl ions in a cation exchange membrane used in chlor-alkali cells is studied based on a model membrane consisting of narrow capillaries 5–10 ångströms in radius. The dependence of ion flux on pore surface charge density and pore size is developed based on the electrokinetic transport theory and a high potential approximation in narrow pores. The result is compared with the ion flux obtained from a phenomenological model based on a cluster-network structure for the perfiuorosulfonic acid membranes.
