Abstract

Abstract The effects of water interaction with UO 2 single crystals (leaching) were studied by means of 7.53 MeV 4He-ion channeling. Upon leaching at temperatures above 150°C transformation of the surface layer into a higher oxide, namely β-U 3O 7, was observed. The lattice mismatch between the bulk crystal and the transformed layer produced important changes in the 〈110〉 axial channeling direction. Based on these data and Monte Carlo channeling simulations a model structure of the transformed layer was developed.
