Abstract

Highlights • Many patients with chronic medical problems receive opiods for pain management. • Life-threatening opioid overdose is traditionally managed with invasive mechanical ventilation. • Noninvasive ventilation is an acceptable alternative even for severe cases of drug-induced respiratory depression. • Noninvasive ventilation should be particularly considered for frail patients.
