Abstract

Abstract The transport of protons across a dialysis membrane in the presence of acids and bases is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Due to the reversible binding of protons to bases the transport rate of protons can be considerably augmented by buffer shuttles. The extent of transport facilitation depends on the buffer pK and concentration, up to one million fold increase in transport rate at high concentration, as well as on the pH in the liquid phases. The experimental results obtained with acetate, phosphate and ammonia are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
