Abstract

Abstract Among the uncertainties surrounding the life of Mozart, few have been the subject of as much speculation as the matter of the composer's final illness and death. The debate has often seemed somewhat pointless, because direct medical evidence has been lacking and, since the body was buried in an unmarked gravesite, is likely to remain lacking. Indirect or circumstantial evidence, however, can contribute to an understanding of the matter, and it is the purpose of this communication to call attention to the discovery of an unexpected piece of circumstantial evidence which throws an entirely new light on the subject.
