Abstract

Abstract The events of DNA replication, ribosome and protein synthesis during the cycle of mammalian cells are organized by a dynamic model which allows accurate simulation of the kinetics of macromolecular net syntheses during the cell cycle. The model gives an explanation of the observation that the initial ribosome and protein levels are relevant to the dynamics of cellular growth, and it indicates that main determinants of the growth rate are the velocity of protein synthesis and protein degradation. The significance of the threshold mechanism proposed to control DNA replication and the possibility of introducing a probability density function in its response are discussed.
