Abstract

Abstract The validity of the Coulomb stripping approximation for (d,p) reactions was investigated numerically for six targets ranging from 16O to 238U. The investigation involved finding the region in ( E d, Q) space where DWBA calculations that include nuclear optical-model potentials yield agreement with calculations that include only the Coulomb potentials. For nuclei between 48Ca and 238U the boundary between valid and non-valid Coulomb stripping was found to have an E d dependence proportional to Z and a Q dependence proportional to Z A 1 3 ; and furthermore, this boundary can be approximated by a straight line which, for 90Zr( d, p) 91Zr, has the intercepts E d = 4.2 MeV and Q = 5.2 MeV.
