Abstract

Abstract 1. 1. The normal heart-rate (at 25° C.) of the Madagascar hissing cockroach is 66.5 beats per minute. 2. 2. There is no difference between sexes. 3. 3. 10 −2 M and 10 −3 M acetylcholine slows the beat (to 56.1 and 63.1 beats per minute respectively), whereas 10 −4 M ACh has no effect. 4. 4. Glutamate (10 −2 M) is also without effect, but 5-hydroxytryptamine (10 −2 M) is slightly stimulatory (68.8 beats per minute).
