Abstract

Abstract A simple, logical approach to the problem of constructing irreducible (minimum-state) realizations of time invariant systems is presented. Two algorithms are given, one for determining the dimension of the irreducible realization and the other for actual construction of the realization using simple algebraic relationships. The realization obtained is in diagonal or uncoupled form whether or not the system modes are distinct. An example illustrating the simplicity of the procedure is considered in detail.
