Abstract

A total of 62 bacterial strains (50 from Sahelian areas in Senegal, 3 from Mauritania, 8 from Mediterranean areas in Tunisia and 1 from Burundi) obtained from under Acacia raddiana trees, were compared with 51 reference strains of Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, Azorhizobium, Sinorhizobium and Agrobacterium. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDSPAGE) of proteins was used to determine the taxonomic positions of those mentioned and the relationships between strains obtained from the soil surface and those obtained from deep soil. Fiftyone strains could be placed in twelve protein electrophoretic clusters, seven of which were different from clusters containing various references or representative strains. The other 11 strains could not be placed in any group and are separated from one another. The possible relationships among electrophoretic groups, geographic origins and depths of isolation at a particular site are discussed. (Af. J. of Science and Technology: 2002 3(1): 34-44)
