The keto acids are a group of compounds which may be studied together conveniently, and which play essential roles in both anabolic and metabolic pathways of metabolism. Chemical characteristics of these substances, such as possible replacement of the carbonyl oxygen with an amino group or its reduction to a hydroxyl group, the heightened ability ability of a carboxyl group adjacent to the carbonyl carbon, and the heightened reactivity of an adjacent methylene carbon, may explain the variety of metabolic conversions in which they take part.
