Some are based on vegetation physiognomy, vegetation structure, or environmental factors. Some of these approaches are useful at very broad scales. For work at fine scales, however, floristic approaches to vegetation, i.e. those based on the species composition of the plant communities, are essential. Classifications based on Species Dominance. This is probably the most widely used system of defining plant communities. Normally communities are named according the most easily noticed plant species. Dominance type (Whittaker 1962)- A plant community type defined by the dominance of one or more species. These species are usually the most important ones in the uppermost stratum of the plant canopy. The term "dominance", however, has no strict definition, but in most cases it refers to the most conspicuous species in the community and high in at least one of the components of importance values (cover, biomass, density, frequency). Whittaker (1962) noted that dominance types are most useful for describing broad groups of vegetation with similar dominance of the trees in the upper plant canopy, but often with heterogeneous habitat conditions. Clements referred to such regions as "associations" but this was in marked contrast to the narrowly defined associations of the Braun-Blanquet system. Sociations of Du Rietz (1921) This term was used by Du Rietz to designate plant community types with certain dominant species in each layer of the vegetation canopy. The sociation became the basic unit of vegetation for the Northern European or Uppsala School of phytosociology.
