Abstract

Abstract A study of the histological and ultrastructural changes observed in the extraocular muscles of rabbits following local cryo-application is reported. It was found that muscle regeneration is rapid, and at 72 hr recognizable myoblasts are numerous. A remarkable feature of the reaction of the extraocular muscles to cold injury is the massive infiltration by polymorphonuclear cells with their subsequent incorporation into mononucleate cells and into sarcolemmal tubes. The possibility is raised that polymorphonuclears participate in regeneration in the capacity of trephocytes.
