Abstract

Abstract Previous articles on the construction of nomographs with hyperbolic coordinates have dealt only briefly with the properties of the coordinate systems, attention being devoted primarily to practical applications.Extensive application of these methods, however, requires imagination and the freedom to select among, or depart from, the various types of coordinate systems suitable for the construction of nomographs. These requirements cannot be met without a clear mental picture of the properties of hyperbolic coordinate systems in general, and their relationships to cartesian coordinates. The purpose of the present article is to close the many gaps left by the treatment given in previous articles, and to provide a concise and systematic theoretical background for further application of these methods.
