Abstract

Abstract The coagulation rate of a dilute polydisperse suspension of small particles is considered for large Péclet number, P ij , which provides a measure of the ratio of the relative gravity-induced motion to Brownian motion between two rigid spheres. In particular, a two-term expansion for the dimensionless coagulation rate (capture efficiency) as function of inverse Péclet number has been developed by using a regular perturbation method. It is found that Brownian diffusion can act to decrease the coagulation rate. Therefore, the additivity assumption is not valid in this regime.
