Abstract

Magnetic nanoparticles have strong magnetic interaction between particles and have extremely high surface energy when blended with polymer. This is the reason why magnetic nanoparticles are aggregated and hard to control in polymer matrix. To overcome the problem, surface modification is performed with end-carboxylic acid polystyrene. That polymer is synthesized with substitution of reactive ester end-functionalized polystyrene and the new initiator which included pentafluorophenol is used to synthesis of polystyrene through atom transfer radical polymerization. To investigate substitution of polystyrene end group and surface modification of nanoparticle, we have used several kinds of measurement such as 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (F-NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). * Note: The text above is the abstract of the thesis.
