Abstract

Abstract A simple extension to the concept of submodels of the nuclear shell model is examined with basis states defined in terms of the non-orthogonal states from several submodels. It is shown that in some cases a simpler description of states in intermediate coupling can be given with a non-orthogonal set of states than with an orthogonal set from a single submodel. The examples of 19F and 37Ar are considered to show how use can be made of non-orthogonal states in a realistic calculation.
