Abstract

Abstract We consider a vanishing bare mass of the up-quark as a solution to the strong CP-problem, where the physical m up is obtained through the QCD-instanton contribution. It is shown that such a situation allows a simple and compact parametrization of the pattern of quark masses and mixing angles. All phenomenological constraints can be fulfilled with a small number of input parameters and the scheme predicts a rather large mixing between the second and the third family.
