Abstract

Abstract A heat-flow map of Europe is presented, based on more than 1800 single values. As the most outstanding result a thermal subdivision of Europe is obtained with respect to both the amount of the heat flow and the type of anomalies. Along three transcontinental profiles crossing Europe in the NE-SW direction the temperature‚ÄĒdepth distribution has been calculated. Along the margins of the major tectonic units (e.g. Precambrian platform, Central European basin, Alpine foldbelt, Tyrrhenian Sea) strong lateral variations of the temperature are obtained. The results give support for assuming a convective cell below Central Europe.
