Abstract

Selecting a hazardous waste disposal contractor is a challenging process. For many organizations, the selection process can be overwhelming, and many important considerations are often overlooked. Nearly all reputable hazardous waste disposal contractors offer similar disposal technologies and services. Thus, it is important to evaluate multiple hazardous waste disposal contractors through a formal bid process prior to selecting a contractor. An extensive evaluation procedure will ensure that the selected contractor will suit an organization's specific needs. A variety of wide-ranging factors must be considered and evaluated in order to make an informed decision. Environmental compliance, responsiveness, disposal options, and costs are just a few aspects which must be thoroughly evaluated. This article will offer practical advice to augment the contractor selection process. Recommendations to streamline and improve efficiencies during the process will also be discussed. A well-organized selection process can be the first step in establishing a collaborative waste management program while improving program efficiency and compliance.
