Abstract

Abstract The present study reports the influence of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) on the development of cultured neurons from chick embryo cerebral hemispheres. Cultures were initiated in serum-supplemented medium and then transferred to serum-free hormonally-defined medium containing various concentrations of ACTH 1–24. The effects of ACTH on the light microscopic features, metabolic activity and permeation properties were examined. The results demonstrate that ACTH exerts a trophic action on the neurons.
