Abstract

Abstract The E-pO 2− diagram is very instructive for the selection of corrosion-resistant materials. In the molten hydroxide system, the equilibrium constant K 1 of the reaction 2 OH −=H 2O+O 2− is one of the basic data for the E-pO 2− diagram. In order to obtain the constant K 1, we determined the chemical potential of Na 2O( μ o(Na 2O)) dissolved in molten sodium hydroxide at 623 K (350°C) to be −4.71×10 5 J mol −1, by the use of the following cell: Na/beta-alumina/NaOH(Na 2O)/ZrO 2-Y 2O 3/O 2(Pt) K 1 calculated from the above experimental data is then 1.0×10 −10 atm.
