Abstract

Abstract A two stage sequential technique for the solution of a wide class of structural optimization problems is proposed. It is based on an overlapping decomposition of the structural domain, which is assumed to be discretized by finite elements. The optimal overlapping decomposition is derived from the nullspace of the equilibrium equations which is computed by a turn-back LU-decomposition minimizing the overlap of the subdomains. The iterative solution of the structural optimization problem is performed by a two level approach where the nodal displacements are the coordination variables.
