Stabilizing effect of aluminium, yttrium and zirconium in divalent fluoride glasses

Abstract

Abstract Glasses may be synthesized in ZnF 2 MF 2 systems where M = Sr, Ba, Ca, Cd. In order to increase their stability, various fluorides have been associated with the basic ZnF 2 SrF 2 BaF 2 ternary system. Glass formation has been investigated with 5 and 10% AlF 3. Yttrium fluoride also stabilizes these quaternary glasses. The vitreous areas in the pseudo ternary systems ZrF 4 YF 3 AlF 3 and ZrF 4 YF 3 ThF 4, with 30% ZnF 2, 10% BaF 2 and 10% SrF 2, are reported. Thickness of the sample may exceed 5 mm. Standard glass compositions and main physical values are reported. Chemical durability is similar to that of fluorozirconate glasses and depends on the pH of the aqueous solution.
