Abstract

Abstract We examine the one loop ultraviolet finiteness properties of nonlinear σ-models describing a four dimensional Green-Schwarz formulation of N = 1 heterotic strings propagating in a curved superspace background that includes the dilaton (tensor) multiplet. The requirement that the one loop divergences of the d = 2 effective action be absorbed into a field redefinition of the supercoordinate in the form of a diffeomorphism is shown to lead to a one parameter family of equations that the background fields must satisfy. By comparing the bosonic parts of this family of equations with those obtained in earlier analyses of the bosonic string, we argue that the classical equations of motion for the background fields correspond to a particular member of this family.
