Abstract

Abstract This review is a summary of a study carried out for the Council on Materials Science, which was established by the Division of Materials Sciences, U.S. Department of Energy, to provide in-depth information needed to formulate research policy. It covers research on new materials including polymers, intermetallic compounds, amorphous solids, thin films, solid state ionics, catalysts and semiconductors. For each of these materials an evaluation of the state of the art is given followed by a summary of the research opportunities and needs and a discussion of technological opportunities. The study concluded (1) that a large number of new materials can be prepared without a massive effort by imaginative application of established techniques, (2) that a close coupling of synthesis, characterization and measurement of properties is highly desirable, (3) that amorphous and thin film materials offer a wide range of systems that can increase basic understanding and can offer solutions to technical problems and (4) that the major share of innovative inorganic synthesis has been undertaken recently in Europe with the U.S.A. playing a minor role.
