Abstract

Abstract A single crystal of La 1.88Sr 0.12CuO 4 was studied by means of X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments and elastic measurements. The obtained data show that this compound undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at around 260 K. The order parameter exponent value β = 0.34 ± 0.02 and the elastic constant exponent μ - 0.5 were deduced from the neutron diffraction and sound velocity data respectively. Both values agree well with theoretical predictions. We do not observe any anomalies in the intensity of the superlattice peak vs. temperature curves in the range from 10 K to 260 K in either X-ray or neutron diffraction measurements.
