Abstract

Abstract The simplified model of the packed bed, in which heat is generated in the wall of a tube by zero-order reaction and transferred to a fluid flowing through it, has been sophisticated by including the effects of heat conduction in either the wall or fluid or both. Smoothed or partially smoothed versions of the discontinuous steady states of the first model are obtained and the initial conditions from which they evolve are studied. In particular, there is a trade-off between the conductivities of fluid and wall in the way that high values of one or the other can promote fully ignited steady states.
