Abstract

The Covered Bazaar has been special for Istanbul due not only to the variety of items sold in it but also its special location and unusual harmonious relationship with the city. With a regular cell-structured plan schema it creates a focus point and fits perfectly in the surrounding areas of production, distribution and consumption, which usually have an irregular layout. It does not only contribute to the activities around but also orientates them. Possessing an architectural layout that freely adapts itself to the changing requirements of trade it adds an interesting liveliness to the cityscape by inverting and diverting chaotic movements. This provides a unique, harmonious relationship between a huge building>complex and an ancient city, both are resisting the effects of time.
