Abstract

Catecholamines, and especially epinephrine and norepinephrine, have been of central interest and importance in stress research since the first demonstration of the role of sympathetic arousal in response to stress. The catecholamines are the key secretory products of the adrenal medulla and sympathetic nervous system that galvanize the cardiovascular defense reaction to potentiate the organism's chances of survival by fight-or-flight. This article summarizes the role of catecholamines in stress and health.
