What causes the first-order magnetic transition in solid3He?

Abstract

Abstract A renormalization group calculation based on the magnetic structure suggested by Osheroff et al. shows that the phase transition to the antiferromagnetic state in solid 3He is of first order irrespective of the microscopic interaction. Thus, the first order nature of the transition can not be taken as support for any specific model, such as the four-spin exchange model put forward by previous authors.
