Abstract

Abstract The mechanism of sodium excitation by collision with vibrationally excited nitrogen has been investigated in non-equilibrium conditions behind reflected shock waves. Experiments showed that the coupling between the sodium excitation temperature and the nitrogen vibrational temperature corresponds quite well with that calculated with the Fisher—Smith distribution of partial cross sections.
