Abstract

Abstract Three perovskite-related solid solutions have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and electron microscopy: LaCr 1− x -Fe x O 3(0 ⩽ x ⩽ 1), La 1− y Ca y CrO 3− z (0 ⩽ y ⩽ 0.5) and La 1− y Ca y Cr 1− x Fe x -O 3− z (0 ⩽ y ⩽ 0.5; 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.5). When heated in air, the AMO 3 stoichiometry is preserved, multitwinned three dimensional crystals being obtained. However, when calcium-substituted samples are treated in a reducting atmosphere, AMO 3− z (0 ⩽ z ⩽ 0.25) solid solutions are formed, the non-stoichiometry being accommodated at random along the crystals.
