Abstract

The lack of littérature on the subject testifies to the fact that the British were far less interested in the telephone in its infancy than in the railroad. From its advent in 1876 until its naturalization in 1912, the novelty's handicap was twofold - a lack of available funds, and political hesitation regarding a public or private status. Scepticism shown by the press and relaying institutions as a whole contrasted with the dynamism manifested during the same period with regard to the rapid development of new technologies.
