Abstract

Abstract Following the concept of plasticity theory, both normal and tangential contact constraints are stated as complementarity conditions with penalty parameters. Based on the derived contact conditions and the principle of virtual work, a finite element-mathematical programming method is presented for solving frictional contact problems in elasticity. This method can avoid the tiresome iteration appearing in previous trial and error methods. Two examples are chosen to illustrate the applicability of the method.
