Abstract

Abstract A purely numerical analysis of Curie-point pyrolysis—mass spectral data does not show a definite relationship between these data and coal rank. The application of the same numerical methods after mass selection based on chemical considerations improves the results. The same approach shows the possibility of discriminating insoluble organic matter in sediments (kerogen) according to its type and/or environment of sedimentation. In a series of sediment samples containing organic matter of different types and the same diagenetic stage several groups can be distinguished, in general accordance with paleontological and other geochemical data.
