Abstract

Abstract This article outlines a systematic approach to the formulation of a strategy for Research and Development. The author discusses the need for companies to adopt a coherent strategy in the face of rapid technological change, the continual threat of product obsolesence, and the mounting cost of Research and Development. He then reviews the important factors in the development of strategy, the appraisal of the environment, of competition and of international trends, the analysis of company strengths and weaknesses, and the willingness to take risks, and finally the choice of strategy—offensive, defensive, or absorptive.
