Summary : Intelligence and aging, a cross-sectional analysis of the French standardisation sample of the WAIS-R with educational level controlled. The standardisation sample of the French adaptation of the WAIS-R is an important source of reliable information about the aging of cognitive aptitudes. This sample is composed of ten age groups of 100 subjects representative of the French population. All these subjects have been tested in a strictly controlled situation. We analysed the standard scores of the subjects from 25 to 79 years (N = 700) wiih control of the influence of the level of education on the difference between age groups. For that purpose, we applied two methods : a multiple regression analysis and the adjustment of the standard scores inside each age group with respect to the level of education. From the results of those analysis we have to reject the Kaufman and al. (1989) hypothesis. Following these authors the aging of intellectual performances on the WAIS-R could be explained in terms of fluid intelligence and crystallised intelligence. It is more likely to explain the regression of the results by the covariation of different factors, especially the spatial dimension of the task and the importance of the working memory in this particular task.
