Abstract

Sarcoplasmic reticulum of Achalarus lyciades direct flight muscle surrounds individual myofibrils and makes triadic contact with T tubules at repeat intervals between Z lines and the middle of the sarcomeres. The sarcoplasmic reticulum penetrates myofibrils and anastomoses among myofilaments in the center of each sarcomere. The significance of this morphology is discussed in terms of the speed and synchrony of this muscle.
